I was just downstairs in my basement exercising on my Precor machine and saw this commercial.

I nearly fell off of the machine.

A commercial came on TV from the Corn Refiners Association.  The gist of the ad is a mom pouring her child a large cup of fruit punch out of this huge gallon container.  Do you remember when you were a kid it was the kind at the grocery store your parents would never ever buy, they were red, orange, or purple.    The real thick syrupy sugary stuff.  The staple of any cool mom’s birthday party. Right?

Back to the commercial … a health-conscious mom standing next to the pouring mother asked her if she was really going to give a glass of that to her child? After all is was full of high fructose corn syrup.

Well, the mother pouring the beverage looked at her with some question like there was no reason why she shouldn’t.  She then responded by saying there’s nothing wrong with high fructose corn syrup in moderation.

Now look I’m a pharmacist, and when a patient with diabetes comes in my pharmacy and wants to share in their grandson’s birthday party the next day by enjoying a scoop of ice cream or a piece of cake.  I will usually respond, “Mr. Jones it is no problem if you enjoy life sweeter things, but in moderation.”

I don’t think that telling the world how safe high fructose corn syrup compares to that situation.

There is only one reason why high fructose corn syrup is in the majority of everything we eat and drink, that is because it is CHEAP.

There are other natural ways to sweeten foods and beverages:

  • maltose
  • glucose
  • honey
  • cane sugar
  • maple syrup
  • stevia
  • and others

Somehow, since the introduction of high fructose corn syrup our nation is more unhealthy than it ever has been.    Your parents ate Wonder Bread and they didn’t get fat.  Don’t you find that interesting?

We got fat when high fructose corn syrup became a main ingredient in our diet because the manufacturers are cheapskates.

I challenge you to pick up items the local grocery store, especially beverages, and see if they don’t have high fructose corn syrup.

Frankly, I am absolutely disgusted by this advertisement and can’t believe an organization trying to support itself by selling its corn would approve such an ad.  After all, open the Wall Street Journal, you can’t finish an edition without seeing how the corn growers are going to reap big rewards saving the world by making cleaner fuels for our cars to burn out of corn.

Which market you think is bigger?

So the Super Size Your Health Tip for the day is to avoid high fructose corn syrup at all costs.  I promise your belly will thank you.
