You’ve heard the phrase many times if you are a smoker. You know when you quit smoking cold turkey, it’s an abrupt process. You stop smoking. Right Now. You throw the cigarettes away and finally make a conscious decision to never smoke again.
What many people fail to realize is that this method has shown some of the highest success rates in helping people stay smoke free. Studies have shown that when you quit this way your withdrawal period is shortened. All it takes is time and will power to accomplish this.
Here are some common sense tips to help you reach your final goal. Get busy and stay busy. The more you keep your mind occupied, the less time you have to think about lighting up. Drink lots of water. As you well know, this helps your body rid itself of the chemicals that you have been feeding it over the years.
Stay away from people who smoke. Avoid them at all costs if possible. If you have friends who smoke, politely ask them to not do it around you. Spend more time in smoke free places to avoid the temptation to have a cigarette.
Start exercising and eating healthier meals. Not only do you already know the health benefits of these, but it’s a proven fact that these good habits will help you stay smoke free in the long term.
When you quit smoking cold turkey you also have the added benefit of no out of pocket expense. You don’t have the added costs associated with patches, gums or medications. Your annual cost savings if you were a one pack a day smoker could be as much as $1,400 to $1,500. Do you think you might find something to do with those savings?
Granted, at times it is going to be difficult. You have to remember that your smoking is one of the strongest addictions known to mankind. Some studies have shown it is even more difficult to overcome than heroin.
So stay focused. A large part of quitting is mental so develop the mindset that you won’t be defeated ever again by cigarettes. Making the effort to change the way you think is crucial to your long term success.
Hopefully when you quit smoking cold turkey you stick with it. Your body, your friends and those who love you will appreciate all the hard work that lies ahead. Always remember, the longer you remain smoke free, the longer you get to stick around and enjoy life.
