Combating the aging process isn’t just a matter of eating one food or another, or taking one pill or concoction or another.  In order to combat the aging process it is useful to learn which vitamins are true anti-aging vitamins, and then which foods contain high levels of these anti-aging vitamins and include them in the normal, every day diet. There are a handful of vitamins that serve an especially important function as anti-aging vitamins.

Perhaps the most important of these vitamins if Vitamin C.  It helps keep blood platelets from clumping together which may help prevent heart disease, and also Vitamin C retards free radical damage to LDL Cholesterol.  Vitamin C is a “heavy hitter” among anti-aging vitamins.

Number two in the big list of anti-aging vitamins is Vitamin E. Vitamin E does provides many of the same benefits of Vitamin C, plus Vitamin E also is indicated in helping to retard certain age related vision problems like cataract growth and macular degeneration.

Beta Carotene is a powerful anti-oxidant in the body.  It is a natural fat soluble pigment, and its serves an important purpose ad the body turns it into Vitamin A, itself a powerful anti-oxidant that protects the immune system.

Co-enzyme Q10, or CoQ10 is one of the most powerful of anti-aging vitamins.  It protects the effects of Vitamin E in combating degeneration of membranes and blood cholesterol.  And perhaps more importantly, CoQ10 it is located in the areas of cells where energy is produced. CoQ10 is found in fish and meats but most experts agree that this is one of the anti-aging vitamins that should be taken in fairly large doses as a supplement by people who are over the age of fifty.

Another important member of the family of anti-aging vitamins is Lycopene yet another member of the carotenoid family of chemicals which includes Beta Carotene.  Lycopene is a fat soluble pigment found in such vegetables as tomatoes and is a powerful anti-oxidant that research has indicated combats certain types of cancer.  Some studies have suggested that Lycopene may be a major retardant to the development of prostate cancer cells.

So where do we find these powerful anti-aging vitamins?  Vitamin C is found in oranges and broccoli, and cauliflower among other fruits and vegetables.  Vitamin E is found in tomatoes, peanuts as well as sardines and fresh avocados among other foods. Beta carotene is found in yellow root vegetables such as carrots and yams, but also in yellow fruits and some green leafy vegetables.

As a general statement experts all agree that as people age, they should supplement all of these anti-aging vitamins by regularly taking vitamin supplements that will provide significant amounts of these substances.
