Detoxification is the process of purging toxins from our body. This process can be done regardless of when the exposure has taken place, it could have been yesterday or ten years ago.
The body has defense mechanisms to purge toxins from the body and does so every day. Examples of detoxification can be as simple as urination and defecation and even sweating. Consumption of spoiled food or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol will cause vomiting which purges the toxic chemicals. It is a defense mechanism, designed to protect us from ourselves. When the body is toxin free it can heal itself and cleanse itself.
You can conduct a proactive support program to detoxify your body. There are two ways of doing this:
- Physician supervised detoxification using prescription medications – this type of program is used in severe cases of exposure. A good example would be a child that has been diagnosed with Autism. Many children with Autistic spectrum disorder have evidence of mercury toxicity. Physicians who specialize in chelation therapy can conduct specialized detoxification programs.
- Drug free or natural detoxification – this type of program you can do in your home, with or without a physician involved. You just have to do it responsibly and follow the directions to the program you are working with. The program can be supplement based, fasting, or specific to a type of diet protocol.
Regardless of which form of detoxification you choose to pursue, there are some things you need to know. The process of detoxification is much like treating acne in a teenager. It is not uncommon for the symptoms to get worse before they get better. Patients that undergo a detox program will often experience flu like symptoms or make more trips to the bathroom as a result of the body adjusting to the internal changes. This is a natural process as the body releases toxins stored in fat cells and it is possible that these discharges can cause symptoms like the flu, for example. Other symptoms may be headache, nausea, diarrhea, sinus drainage, etc… For example, patients that start a blood pressure medication will experience a feeling of dizziness or headache the first week of starting the medication. This is because the body is adjusting to a lower overall blood pressure. The body needs time to adjust to a changing environment.
Detoxification is a cleansing process that helps improve the function of your kidneys, liver, and immune system.
