Let me give you an example of an enzyme that is very important to our health, nitric oxide. Nitric oxide can be inactivated by even low level lead exposure. Where do you get lead exposure from? Well if you live in an old house or older city you have the potential for exposure to lead from paint chips and lead plumbing. If that doesn’t get you it is quite possible that the dust in the atmosphere from decades of burning leaded gasoline in cars will get you. So why is nitric oxide important? When nitric oxide is inactivated, this causes an increase in sympathetic activity and norepinephrine in the plasma, resulting in an increase in blood pressure in both humans and animals. So it is quite possible that you have high blood pressure as a result of lead exposure, all things being equal. That assumption is based on a healthy body weight, diet, and exercise program too by the way. This damage can be characterized as free radical damage. Damage by free radical heavy metals that result in malfunctioning cells.
Nutrients to the rescue!
There are nutrients that can support the battle against free radical damage. Nutrients that are high in antioxidant activity are the best sources for supporting cell protection.
- Mixed carotenoids
- Mixed tocopherols
- Vitamin C
- Selenium, zinc, copper, manganese
- CoQ10
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
- Green tea
- Grape seed extract
- Omega 3 fatty acids
All of these nutrients are present in your body already. By supplementing with extra nutrients you can help your body defend against attacks by free radical damange that can be caused by heavy metal exposure and toxicity. Supplementation of these nutrients will improve the body’s ability to detoxify and eliminate toxins by aiding in repair of the detoxification pathways.
Have you ever done a detoxification program? Please leave me a comment and explain what you have done or what product you have used.
