What are the effects of Metal Toxicity?

This week we have been discussing the top Hazardous Substances and what sources they come from.  Today we are going to talk about how metals that build up in your body can affect your health.

Metal toxicity has vast effects on our body and can have serious consequences on your health. Lets look at the effects of metal toxicity by organ system or function:

  • Neruologic effects – metals can damage brain structures, down regulate dopamine activity, cause dementia, and lower overall IQ.
  • Nephrotoxic effects – kidney function can be reduced and or damaged.
  • Immune System malfunction – toxicity can slow or inactivate the immune system response and make it more difficult of the body to fight off infection and disease.
  • Cardiovascular – damage to heart, arteries can cause scarring and plaque build up, and blood cells prevents body from transporting nutrients and eliminating waste products from the body cells.
  • Bone and Tissue effects – Metal toxicity can affect the strength of the bone matrix leaving bones weak and brittle and tissue deposits can lead to abnormal cell replication or cancerous cells.
  • Dysbiosis – throwing the gastrointestinal tract, out of normal balance can cause fungal overgrowth and infection.  When the bowel is disrupted, this affects the digestion and absorption of vitamins and nutrients putting additional stress on the body.
  • Endocrine Dysfunction – the endocrine system has far reaching consequences involving thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, pancreas, and sex hormones
  • Mood disorders – toxicity can result in anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Metabolic dysfunction – weight gain, energy decline along with other metabolic effects

Much like anything else we consume or are exposed to, excessive exposure to metals can cause far reaching effects on our health and well being.  A metabolic imbalance is possible when even when only one major organ system is compromised.  Each system interacts with one another to establish a harmony, a homeostasis.  Breakdown of one can affect all systems and set you up for multiple health problems.
