In yesterday’s post I listed the Top 20 Hazardous Substances as recognized by the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry.
You are probably thinking, “ok these items are toxic, I will stay away from them, thanks for the health tip.” Well, good luck with that! Let’s look at Aluminum as an example of a metal that we could easily get exposure to every day. (Aluminum is not a heavy metal, but it is a documented source of dementia and is #194 on the ASTDR’s List.)
Sources of Aluminum:
- It is possible to eat small amounts of aluminum in food
- Aluminum dust is in the air all around us – you breath that air
- Contaminated water sources like manufacturing plants, waste sites, regions with high aluminum content in the soil
- Antacids
- Antiperspirants
- Cooking utensils like pots, pans, etc…
Sources of Arsenic:
- Drinking water, breathing air, or eating food that contains arsenic
- Breathing sawdust, burning smoke
- Living near hazardous waste sites
- Living near high levels of arsenic in rock
Sources of Cadmium
- Breathing air contaminated by cadmium – metal soldering or welding, cigarette smoke, burning of fossil fuels, municipal waste
- Batteries
- Eating foods like shellfish, liver, kidney
- Drinking contaminated water
Sources of Mercury
- Eating fish and shellfish swimming in polluted lakes and oceans
- Breathing vapors from industrial manufacturers, waste spills, dental procedures, chemicals
- Dental work amalgam, medical treatments
- Broken thermometers
Wow! So if we eat, drink or breath the air on any given day we are at risk.
Is it really that bad to be exposed to metals like this? After all they are all around us all the time and we are ok right?
Unlike water soluble vitamins, we don’t eliminate metals from our body in urine and feces. They just keep building up in the liver, kidney, and adipose tissue. Check in with me tomorrow and we will discuss the effects that these metals can cause when they build up to dangerous levels in our body.
Do you know which Queen is being Poisoned in the picture above?
