Supersizeyourhealth tip #9 Sleep More!
“I will get all the sleep I need when I am dead” Sam Elliott as Wade Garrett in Road House
Do you agree with this?
You know, there always seems to be that one more thing to do before you go to bed at night. Financial guru’s like Jim Cramer speak of getting 3 or 4 hours of sleep at night. In college you bragged when you stayed up all night studying. Boy were we tough!
We push ourselves to do more and more each day. Get this done, get that done, get to the store, finish this presentation, get the kids dinner, then get them to bed. What a rat race it is.
We need to all remember to take care of ourselves. After all, that is the theme of this series. So get some more sleep starting tonight.
Here are some reasons to get at least 8 hours of sleep at night:
- You will not wake in the morning feeling run over by a truck.
- You will have better weight management – There is a Standford study that reports if you get at least 8 hours of sleep at night you will lose weight vs. someone who sleeps less than 6 hours all things being equal.
- You body needs time to repair and restore itself, especially your immune system.
- Sleep deprivation actually adds to the stress on your adrenal glands which increases cortisol levels and therefore leads to increased carb cravings and cupboard raiding. (Read, causing weight gain)
So what time are you going to bed tonight?

Wow, did you just throw out a Road House quote? That’s brilliant.
I’m still on a 6.5 – 7 hour scheudle. Occasionally that goes to 8-9 depending on the day (ie – I take it when I feel it is needed). Otherwise, I have to stay up late so I can watch movies like Road House…

I know this guy who taught me a scale on how to rate movies. It has always brought a smile to my face to rate a move on a zero to 5, zero being a total and complete waste of time and 5 being metaphysical perfection. Not sure where Road House rates, but the quote has always stuck with me.
Road House is a solid 3. Maybe even 3.5 (since the scale only uses whole and half numbers).
