How closely to you read the label that comes on the food you eat? I would guess that if you are reading this blog you probably pay closer attention to the fine details on the ingredients than most.
There are many “standards” out there that have set guidelines for food manufactures and growers to strive for. Keep in mind that it costs companies time and money to adhere to a stricter set of guidelines than the normal status quo. So companies that have achieved these seals have gone the extra mile so pay close attention to those labels. Remember the news about Wal-Mart selling non-organic products as “organic.”
Below are some of the designations that may help guide you through the aisles at the grocery store.
Approved products must use at least 95% natural ingredients. What does that mean you ask? Ingredients like flora, fauna, or minerals and but there is no allowance for chemically processed items. You can find this seal on products made by: Burts Bees, Weleda, and Aubrey Organics.
95% certified organic ingredients inspected by USDA National Organic Program and cannot contain added sulfites. You can find this seal on products made by: Origins Organics, Juice Beauty, Nature’s Gate and Softlips
Products must have 95% natural ingredients, at least 10% of all ingredients must be certified organic, and packaging has to be recyclable. No petroleum, animal materials, or artificial fragrances are permitted in these products. You can find this seal on products made by: Physicians Formula Organic Wear Makeup, Care by Stella McCartney Skin Care.
More than 250 ingredients have been deemed unacceptable by chain, like parabens, sod lauryl sulfates, and chemical sunscreens. No more than 5% petroleum is allowed. Products include: Dr. Hauschka, Jason Naturals, California Baby products.
