Did you know that nutritional support can improve blood sugar levels?

Diabetes has reached near epidemic proportions in the United States, the proportion of overweight and obese Americans is staggering and growing every day.  There are a lot of topics to explore about diabetes, causes, treatments, and nutrition.  Today I would like to focus on nutritional supplements that support healthy blood sugar levels.

Multiple ingredients that can support healthy blood sugar.  You don’t need to take them all. Focus on one or two in addition to a focused diet and exercise program.  These recommendations are in no way meant to be a short cut to healthy meals and physical activity and a medial practitioners supervision.

Alpha lipoic acid – a free radical scavenger, reduces inflammatory markers, stimulates uptake of glucose, Recommended dose of 300-600mg daily with no known toxicity.

Chromium – essential mineral needed for optimum insulin function, down regulates insulin.  Recommended dose of 200-1600 mg daily.  It is important for you to consider supplementation especially if you eat a high carbohydrate diet, drink carbonated beverages, or if you are a strenuous exerciser. The best forms of Chromium are GTF or dinicotinate,  and diglycinate.

Cinnulin – components are cinnamon based but in a propriatary formulation, proven to improve utilization of glucose metabolism. Enhances insulin receptor function and improves lipid profiles. Recommended dose of 125mg twice a day to three times a day with food. Cinnulin can reduce insulin needs, again with physicain permission.

Bitter melon – While not for use in pregnent women, increases insulin biding capacity, lowers serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

Gymnema – retards tase bud desire for sweet taste. Available in wafers, the ideal sweet tooth killer. Indian name means sugar destroyer.

CLA- Conjagated Linoleic Acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid, proven to reduce abdominal adipose tissue in obese men with signs of metabolic syndrome. Reccomended dose of 3g daily minimum on an empty stomach.

Fish oil – May be the single most important supplement anyone can take.   Studies show decreased inflammation, decreased insulin resistance, improve liver and pancreas function, improve cardiovascular risk factors. Fish oil also improves size of blood vessels and better blood flow.

Do you take any of these supplements?

Fish Oil is that important? Hows’ this for an article topic… you’ve talked about vitamin supplements and now these supplements. I’m sure there are more too. If I were going to buy one or two pills to take – which would be the best? Given right now I take none…
