Dr Eldred B. Taylor M.D. authored an excellent book called  Are Your Hormones Making You Sick?: A Woman’s Guide To Better Health Through Hormonal Balance Dr. Taylor takes the approached of promoting optimum health and wellness for women through hormone balancing, nutrition, dietary, and lifestyle modifications. He  combines conventional and alternative medicine therapies to promote optimum health.

I have been very fortunate to attend several lectures both in person and over the internet organized by   Dr. Taylor.  He is a very dynamic speaker and is very good and breaking down complex medical terminology for interested students regardless of medical education background.  Even better he has given extensive documentation of evidence based information to support hormone balancing.

Many of the stories he has told in his live lectures resonate with me still.   One that comes to mind is about how they teach you in medical school to manage women’s health.   He compares it to an image of large medicine cabinet with two doors.  The left side of the cabinet is for women between the ages of 13 and 40 and it is stocked with birth control pills. The right side of the cabinet is for women over 40 years of age.  If you can’t give them a hysterectomy then you can give them Premarin® or Prempro® or some other commercially available product with  limited dosing options. By they way all of those options are putting hormone products in your body that are either synthetic, and don’t exist in nature or are from horses!   Even better there is no need to test hormone levels because it isn’t necessary.

A cornerstone of Dr. Taylor’s book explains that  testing for lab values in addition to taking inventory of troublesome symptoms that  patient is struggling with.

Medical schools have treated women for years with a one size fits all type of medicine.  Regardless of your race, weight, height or health status you get what’s on the above menu.   But don’t fret!  Dr Taylor’s book is required reading for any women or healthcare professional  wanting to get up to speed on the basics of Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy or BHRT.   His text is referenced with clinical journals and medical textbooks from authorities like Speroff.

Dr Taylor shares a very organized overview of hormone health in a small 207 pages with the basics of:

  • The menstrual cycle
  • Hormone basics 101
  • Saliva Testing
  • Conditions caused by hormone imbalance

and a review of the different stages of menopause  perimenopause, osteoporosis, and breast cancer.

No presentation from Dr. Taylor would be complete without tips on how to create balance in your life.

His chapters are short and easy to read and include great bullet point summaries at the end of each chapter.  All medical texts should be written this way!
